A member of the faculty since 1985, Furst is Professor of Art and former chair (2002-2009) of the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Art and Art History. He has received the following recognitions for teaching: University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, 1999; University Distinguished Professorship, UNCW, 1996-98; Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award, UNCW, 1996; College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching, UNCW, 1992.

Furst currently operates Ars Longa Press, a fine print atelier specializing in mezzotint and other forms of intaglio printmaking.
